2022 Asbestos Safety and Management Conference

08 Feb 2022

The Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency (ASEA) and Blue Mountains City Council (BMCC) are pleased to announce the 2022 Asbestos Safety and Management Conference, to be held from 19–20 May 2022 at the Fairmont Resort & Spa in the UNESCO World Heritage listed Blue Mountains.

This important national event, with a special focus on front line asbestos safety management, will comprise a 2-day conference including a series of plenary sessions, workshops and networking activities, as well as optional pre-conference activities held on 18 May. The conference will be a hybrid event, offering delegates the opportunity to either attend in-person or livestream the event.

Every year, an estimated 4,000 Australians die from asbestos-related diseases. This number is four times the annual road toll. By acting together we can stop further tragic deaths by preventing exposure to asbestos fibres through better management of asbestos in both our built and natural environment.

Why should I attend?

Asbestos safety management is a multifaceted issue which cuts across a range of policy and regulatory areas, involving all levels of government. The Asbestos Safety and Management Conference will bring those on the front line of the asbestos management system together with those developing policy, and enforcing laws at the state and national level.

Bringing all these stakeholders together will enable the exchange of experiences and expertise, creating an environment where collaborative plans of actions and solutions can be developed and progressed.

Local governments often bear the brunt of the asbestos problem and face many challenges dealing with Australia’s asbestos legacy including managing waste facilities, cleaning up illegal dumping and dealing with asbestos materials following natural disasters. The conference will have a special focus on how to address these challenges.
The program will contain a mixture of plenary, panel and breakout sessions relevant to government and non-government organisations in the broader asbestos management system. Delegates will hear from leaders and experts in the asbestos management industry who will be sharing insightful case studies aimed at providing updates on compliance requirements, presenting new research and initiatives, and outlining the challenges ahead.

Is this conference for me?

This conference is for anyone involved in the asbestos management system. It will particularly benefit those who are involved in asbestos safety management on the front line, and in turn, those who are responsible for setting the regulatory environment. It will provide an opportunity for policy makers to hear first-hand of the experiences and challenges of those dealing with asbestos related issues day to day.

This conference is for:
•    local government councils, shires and associations – middle management and operational staff
•    asbestos removal contractors
•    regulators
•    Federal, state and territory government agencies
•    asbestos assessors and surveyors
•    property managers
•    occupational hygienists
•    non-government organisations – asbestos disease support and advocacy groups, trade unions and industry bodies.

Registrations are now open, with early bird registration rates available until Thursday, 31 March.
