Endorsement of the Silica National Strategic Plan 2024-2030
The Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency (ASSEA) is pleased to announce that the Commonwealth and state and territory governments have formally endorsed the inaugural Silica National Strategic Plan 2024-2030 (SNSP).
“This landmark achievement marks a critical step in our collective commitment to eliminating silica-related diseases across Australia,” said ASSEA’s Chief Executive Officer, Jodie Deakes.
The SNSP has been developed through extensive consultation with experts, industry, unions, and advocacy groups. It outlines a cohesive, nationwide approach to preventing workplace exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and addressing the re-emergence of silicosis and other silica-related diseases.
“With approximately 1.45 million Australians working in industries where they may be exposed to respirable crystalline silica, the urgency of our efforts cannot be overstated,” Ms. Deakes said.
“The plan’s implementation is vital to protect our workforce and ensure no new cases of accelerated silicosis by 2033, in line with the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy.”
Key highlights of the Silica National Strategic Plan include:
Workplace Risk Reduction: Implementing nationally consistent regulations, including silica risk control plans and prohibitions on unsafe practices.
Education and Awareness: Targeted campaigns to improve understanding of RCS risks and safety measures across all levels of industry.
Health Monitoring and Support: Health surveillance and screening for workers at risk, supported by systematic data collection and analysis.
Research and Development: Research to improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of silica-related diseases.
Global Leadership: Australia’s commitment to sharing best practices internationally and advocating for improved global standards.
“The SNSP sets a clear pathway for coordinated action, with all jurisdictions working towards shared goals. ASSEA will provide ongoing support through research, awareness initiatives, and progress reporting to ensure the plan's successful implementation,” Ms. Deakes added.
Australia’s leadership in addressing silica-related diseases reflects a broader commitment to ensuring safe and healthy workplaces for all. The SNSP represents a unified effort to save lives and mitigate the devastating impacts of silica exposure on workers and their families.
The Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency thanks the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, Department of Health and Aged Care, Lung Foundation Australia, Safe Work Australia, and all contributors, including health professionals and occupational health and safety specialists, for their support in developing the Silica National Strategic Plan.
