SafeWork SA publishes new guidance on respiratory protective equipment

14 Mar 2022

SafeWork SA has published special guidance on respiratory protective equipment (RPE), after identifying widespread non-compliance with fit-testing and other requirements aimed at protecting workers from airborne contaminants like asbestos and crystalline silica.

RPE is a last defence in protecting the wearer from airborne contaminants but is ineffective if it does not fit correctly or is unsuitable for the type of hazard or task.

The new guidance includes advice on: identifying hazardous substances and the most appropriate RPE for them; using RPE; fit-testing and fit-checking; inspecting, maintaining, repairing and storing RPE; monitoring the health of workers required to use RPE; and record-keeping.

When managing health and safety risks arising from respiratory hazards, knowing the correct form(s) a hazardous substance takes is important in ensuring the most appropriate and effective control measure is implemented.
