Asbestos and Silica National Strategic Plans endorsed by governments

16 Dec 2024

We are pleased to announce that the Commonwealth and state and territory governments have endorsed both the Phase Three Asbestos National Strategic Plan 2024-2030 (ANSP) and the Silica National Strategic Plan 2024-2030 (SNSP).

This milestone represents a significant step forward in our ongoing commitment to eliminate asbestos and silica-related diseases in Australia.

Both plans were developed through extensive consultation with a wide range of stakeholders. The ANSP 2024-30 builds on the progress made over the last 10 years under the previous two plans, and the SNSP 2024-30 outlines a coordinated, nationwide approach to addressing the re-emergence of silicosis and other silica-related diseases.

With an estimated 4,000 Australians dying each year from asbestos-related diseases, approximately 6 million tonnes of ageing asbestos material still present in our built environment, and approximately 1.45 million Australians working in industries where they may be exposed to respirable crystalline silica, the urgency of our efforts cannot be overstated.

The ANSP and SNSP set a clear pathway for coordinated action, with all jurisdictions working towards shared goals. ASSEA will continue to support governments in the implementation of both plans through our research, awareness raising and data collection activities. We will also provide regular updates on progress to ensure the successful implementation of both plans.
