Disclosing the presence of asbestos in residential property can help keep people safe. To assist in improving community awareness about this issue, we have developed a targeted digital and social media campaign and resources to assist buyers, sellers, renters, and landlords.

The Disclosure of asbestos in residential property awareness campaign will communicate with residential property buyers, sellers, renters and landlords about their responsibilities and rights when it comes to asbestos and provide information on how to stay safe.

It will encourage sellers to disclose the presence of asbestos in their properties, to minimise the health risks for buyers. In some states and territories, they may be legally obligated to do this.

Similarly, it will encourage landlords to identify, disclose and manage the presence of asbestos in their properties, to minimise the health risks for renters. Landlords may be eligible for tax deductions for asbestos testing and removal.

Importantly, the campaign will not discourage people from buying or renting residential properties containing asbestos. The aim is to educate buyers and renters about how to stay safe around asbestos, by understanding where it might be in a home and how to manage it appropriately.

Further information can also be found on the Disclosure of asbestos in residential property page.
