Most people can’t tell if a material contains asbestos just by looking at it. An asbestos professional can conduct a survey to identify whether asbestos-containing materials are present, their location and condition, and provide you with guidance on how to manage the risks.

The National Guide for Asbestos Surveys was developed by the Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency (ASSEA) in consultation with asbestos professionals, industry associations, regulatory authorities and worker representatives.

This guide aims to provide a robust and standardised process for conducting asbestos surveys (also known as asbestos inspections or audits) in buildings and structures across Australia, so that effective actions can be taken to prevent exposure to airborne asbestos fibres.

The ANSP includes an action for governments to develop incentives that encourage the safe removal of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) from residential and commercial properties, including housing of Indigenous Australians. This report provides information on 5 main types of incentives, the advantages and disadvantages of each type and examples of these incentive schemes used in Australia and overseas.

October was a busy month for ASSEA, having the opportunity to attend a number of external events that allowed us to connect with our stakeholders from across the asbestos and silica safety system.

During National Asbestos Awareness Week 2024, a number of events were held to raise asbestos awareness including the Parliamentary Group on Asbestos Related Disease (PGARD) meeting and memorial services held by support groups from all over Australia.
