Recording suspected exposure: National Asbestos Exposure Register

The National Asbestos Exposure Register (NAER) is a register for anyone who believes they may have been exposed to asbestos. Submitting information helps ensure accurate details are recorded after exposure in case of any future asbestos-related health issues.

What is the National Asbestos Exposure Register?

The Australian Government created the National Asbestos Exposure Register (NAER), a voluntary, privacy-protected register, to record information for members of the community who may have been exposed to asbestos, for their future reference.

This data is stored securely and can be accessed by the individual in the future if they need to recall the exposure event.

Why do individuals record their exposure details on the NAER?

Often there is a long time between exposure to asbestos fibres and developing an asbestos-related disease. Not everyone who is exposed to asbestos fibres will develop an asbestos-related disease. Registering information on the NAER helps to ensure that accurate details are recorded if a disease were to develop in the future.

What should I do if I’ve been exposed to asbestos?

If the suspected exposure occurred in the workplace you need to contact your employer, who should take immediate action to remove the ongoing risk. If this does not occur, contact your state or territory work health and safety regulator.

If the suspected exposure took place in your home or community you can contact your local council or state or territory environmental regulator for advice on reducing the risks and next steps.

You can also talk to your GP about the health risks associated with your potential exposure and request advice on future health assessments.
