Phase two of the National Asbestos Awareness Campaign launches on Sunday 12 March and will run until Monday 10 April 2023.

The Asbestos Safety and Eradication Council met on 8 March 2023 on Ngunnawal Land (Canberra). Prior to the meeting members held a workshop to help set ASEA’s priorities for 2023-2024 which will include the development of the next phase of the Asbestos National Strategic Plan. Members expressed a strong preference for ASEA to prioritise for 2023-2024 the development of a roadmap for governments to move towards proactive legacy removal.

The Australian Government has co-sponsored a proposal with Switzerland, Mali and Burkina Faso to reform the Rotterdam Convention to facilitate the listing of chrysotile asbestos on an annex to the Convention.

17 businesses will share in more than $1.6 million from the Morrison Government to test their great ideas to use technology to reduce regulatory processes.

Action on Illegal Disposal of Asbestos – A Guide for Local Government (the Guide), was also launched during NAAW 2022.

REGULATION CHANGES TO STRENGTHEN THE ASBESTOS BORDER CONTROL 

The heavy use of asbestos (particularly chrysotile asbestos) in South East Asia and claims from the asbestos lobby group that it is “safe” illustrates the importance of Australia’s international work to ban asbestos.

The Australian Government has today announced the appointment of Ms Justine Ross as Chief Executive Officer of the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency.

Direct health care combined with the impact on productivity in the workplace as a result of asbestos-related diseases costs Australia over half a billion dollars a year.

With the cost of dealing with 40,000 kilometres of water mains pipes containing asbestos across Australia expected to significantly rise, a clear nationally consistent approach to managing asbestos in water mains is required.
