The aim of this research is to improve product labelling of products containing respirable crystalline silica, to raise awareness of consumers to the risks posed by these products, and awareness of steps to mitigate those risks.
Commercially available products that contain substances that can cause harm should have on them clear and accurate warning labels and, at the point of sale, relevant safety data sheets that can be taken by consumers. Both warning labels and safety data sheets should describe, accurately and completely, the potential risks to human health of their constituents.
Appropriate labelling of products containing respirable crystalline is critical to reducing incidences of silica-related diseases in Australia. ASSEA is gathering data on the legislative background to labelling in Australia, and in particular how that is being applied by manufacturers and supplier’s of commercial products that contain respirable crystalline silica.
ASSEA is reviewing, at points-of-sale, product labels of both domestic and imported products, the availability of safety data sheets, and the accuracy of both. The aim of this research is to improve product labelling of products containing respirable crystalline silica, to raise awareness of consumers to the risks posed by these products, and awareness of steps to mitigate those risks.
