Declarations

An import declaration is required for the lawful importation of prohibited goods into Australia.

Import Declarations are required to be entered into the Australian Border force (ABF) Integrated Cargo System (ICS) for all importations of engineered stone benchtops, panels or slabs imported with:

  • an import permit
  • a confirmation or exemption provided by an authority of a state or territory,
  • a confirmation provided by Comcare.

Small volume samples for testing are not controlled and do not require a formal declaration. These samples should be no larger than 250mm x 250mm x 40mm each.

The associated cargo report should describe the goods as “engineered stone samples for testing” or “samples of possible engineered stone”.

Community protection question

A community protection question will be generated as a part of the import declaration process for the purpose of declaring engineered stone. Where goods meet the definition of engineered stone for the purposes of the prohibition, the community protection question must be answered ‘yes’.

Exemptions, confirmations and permissions

If the goods are valued under A$1000 and covered by a permit, confirmation, or exemption, must be entered on a Long Form Self Assessed Clearance Declaration (119KB PDF).

Goods description

You must describe the goods accurately. Description must include the material composition and type of good (e.g. ‘engineered stone benchtop’).

Do not include:

  • tariff descriptions
  • brand names
  • product codes
  • generic terms
  • foreign references.

Goods may be held at the border

If your declaration is incomplete, the ABF may hold your goods at the border. You must provide the ABF any relevant permits, confirmations or exemptions when asked.

Further information about the declaration process is available at the ABF's How to import page.
