Research and Evaluation are key parts of ASSEA’s work. Research helps guide everything the Agency does by providing evidence to support the 58 Actions in the Asbestos National Strategic Plan 2024–2030 (ANSP).
Our Research Strategy has two main aspects. One is discovery, or the creation of new data through research. The other is insight, which is the review and analysis of existing data to inform new findings. Together, these strategies help us to fill knowledge gaps, inform policy, and guide practical interventions.
Our research is important because it helps us to implement the ANSP by improving our understanding of asbestos risk, guiding safe removal and disposal, and supporting regulatory reform. It shapes public messaging and allows us to tailor our work to different groups.
Investigating influences on people’s behaviour and how to encourage safer choices.
Integrating a map of the prevalence of asbestos in houses across Australian neighbourhoods into Commonwealth Government databases to help planning for asbestos removal and to ensure community safety in response to natural disasters.
Supporting the development of new technologies for the real-time detection of asbestos, and providing guidance for regulators and manufacturers on best practices for the design and use of portable devices.
Improving our understanding the risks of asbestos present in our daily environment.
Exploring whether aging asbestos-cement water pipes are releasing fibres.
Assessing and identifying the best practices for the treatment and management of ARDs.
