Import and export regulations

Asbestos has been completely banned in Australia since December 2003. Goods are checked at the border to enforce this. There are occasionally circumstances where asbestos may need to be imported or exported across Australian border, but strict rules apply.

Preventing unlawful imports

The Australian Border Force monitors Australian borders to prevent importation of asbestos. Goods entering Australia have to be declared as “asbestos free”. Documentation may be needed to prove this.

Sampling and testing prior to importing

Goods may need to be tested to prove they do not contain asbestos. The Australian Border Force can order testing of goods if they suspect asbestos is present.

Testing requirements

The importer of goods is responsible for ensuring that imported goods do not contain asbestos. They must ensure they have evidence that the goods do not contain asbestos, or arrange testing.

Transporting asbestos

Different departments regulate how asbestos can be transported into, out of and within Australia. Goods containing asbestos need to follow the standard chemical labelling system.
