Import and export regulations
Asbestos has been completely banned in Australia since December 2003. Goods are checked at the border to enforce this. There are occasionally circumstances where asbestos may need to be imported or exported across Australian borders, but strict rules apply.
Permits to import or export asbestos
Sometimes asbestos may need to be imported for testing, research or disposal. To do this, a permit is required. Permits are only granted for specific purposes.
Unlawful asbestos imports
Goods crossing the Australian border are monitored by the ABF to prevent unlawful imports. ASSEA publishes data about asbestos detected at the border, and related safety alerts and recalls.
