Freedom of Information (FOI)
Freedom of information (FOI) means the right of the public to access information Australian Government ministers and Australian Government agencies hold, including Norfolk Island agencies, with some exceptions. This right is promoted and enforced in the Freedom of Information Act 1982- external site (FOI Act).
The Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act) gives you the right to request access to government-held information. This includes information they hold about you or about government policies and decisions.
How to make a Freedom of Information application
Applications for access to documents must:
- be in writing
- state that the application is made under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (the FOI Act)
- provide enough information concerning the documents sought as is reasonably necessary to enable a responsible officer of the department to identify them, and
- give details of how notices may be sent to the applicant (for example, a postal or email address).

The Information Publication Scheme (IPS), established under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (the FOI Act), promotes open and transparent government by requiring Australian Government agencies to proactively publish certain information. We make the following information available on our website:
- information about the agency’s structure
- information about the agency’s functions and decision-making powers
- details of the agency's statutory appointments
- the agency’s annual reports
- the agency's Information Publication Scheme (IPS) Agency Plan, which explains how we administer and maintain our IPS obligations

- information contained in documents that the agency routinely provides in response to requests under the FOI Act
- information that the agency routinely provides to the Australian Parliament
- contact details for officers who can assist with access to agency information or documents under the FOI Act
- operational information that supports the agency in exercising its functions or powers when making decisions or recommendations that affect members of the public, including relevant rules, guidelines, practices and precedents
