Our Council – ASSEC

The Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Council (ASSEC) provides advice to the Minister and to the CEO of ASSEA on the Asbestos and Silica National Strategic Plans.

The Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Council (ASSEC) is made up of a Chair and 12 members appointed under the Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency Act (2013).

ASSEC consists of:

  • the Chair
  • 1 member representing the Commonwealth
  • 4 members representing State, Territory and local governments
  • 2 members representing the interests of workers in Australia
  • 2 members representing the interests of employers in Australia
  • 1 member who has expertise relevant to asbestos safety, asbestos-related diseases, silica safety or silica-related diseases, and
  • 2 other members.

Members are appointed by the Commonwealth Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations for a period of no longer than 3 years.

What does ASSEC do?

ASSEC’s functions are to:

  • provide advice, and make recommendations, to the CEO about the performance of the Agency’s functions, on its own initiative or at the request of the CEO
  • provide advice to the Minister about asbestos safety, asbestos-related diseases, silica safety and silica-related diseases
  • monitor the implementation of the National Strategic Plans by Commonwealth, State, Territory and local governments, and
  • provide advice, and make recommendations, about the Asbestos National Strategic Plan and Silica National Strategic Plan and annual operational plans.
