SafeWork NSW

SafeWork NSW is the workplace health and safety regulator for the NSW Government. We focus on harm prevention and improving the safety culture in NSW workplaces.


We offer advice on improving work health and safety, provide licences and registration for potentially dangerous work and investigate workplace incidents including asbestos.


SafeWork was the chair of the Heads of Asbestos Coordination Authorities (HACA) from its inception in 2011 until 30th June 2018 which implemented the State-wide Asbestos Plan, the Model Asbestos Policy for NSW Councils and an annual National Asbestos Awareness Campaign.


From 1 July 2018 NSW Environment Protection Authority has taken on the administration role of HACA and SafeWork continues to work with the group as an active member. The role of HACA is to ensure that government agencies and councils effectively coordinate the safe management of asbestos to help reduce incidence of asbestos related diseases in NSW.


Our services also include:

  • workshops, presentations, expos and events
  • workplace inspections
  • payments and rebates to NSW businesses and employers, employer associations, trade unions and not-for-profit training organisations to make workplaces safer
  • partnering events in rural and remote communities to spread the safety message.

With more than a third of Australia's entire economic output coming from NSW, the work we do to make workplaces safe is very important. We receive over 200,000 calls and 10,000 emails from customers each year. We issue more than 200,000 licences, notifications, certificates and permits each year.
